Smart, Sustainable HPC: Optimizing Compute for Climate, Innovation, and Impact


High-performance computing (HPC) drives critical breakthroughs in science and engineering from climate modeling to sustainable material discovery. Yet, it also carries a significant environmental footprint, accounting for 1–2% of global greenhouse gas emissions, along with challenges like e-waste and high water demands for cooling.

This workshop will explore how HPC, when deployed responsibly, can accelerate innovation while reducing environmental impact. We’ll look at real-world use cases — including advanced weather forecasting, carbon capture simulation, and renewable energy optimization — and in addition discuss practical strategies to control and optimize HPC usage for sustainability.

We’ll also highlight the emerging role of AI Physics in improving simulation efficiency.

Collaboration across researchers, industry, and policymakers is essential for sustainable HPC. Join us to discuss and help shape solutions to future challenges, from energy-efficient hardware and smarter algorithms to circular economy strategies
